Length: 18.3cm Width: 7.3cm Height: 7.1cm

Kiyomizu-type ware, named after Kyoto’s Kiyomizu (Pure Water) Temple district, is renowned for its refined craftsmanship, vibrant glazes, and often whimsical or pictorial forms. Emerging in the Edo period, these ceramics reflect the sophisticated tastes of Kyoto’s urban culture and often incorporate playful narrative elements, as seen in this piece. This charming incense burner exudes a playful, childlike spirit. Shaped like a fishing boat covered with reed thatch, it features a smiling elderly man in a blue robe peeking out as if cheerfully inviting one aboard. The thatched roof serves as a removable lid for placing incense, while three small loops at the bow and stern suggest it was once suspended for use.
