A cinnabar lacquer square tray in Chinese Yuan style

This square red lacquer tray with flaring sides is carved on the interior main field with a design of two phoenix birds amongst a profusion of chrysanthemum flowers and leaves. The sides similarly carved with only the flowers, leaves and buds. The reverse is plain red lacquer on the sides, and black lacquer on the base, all supported on four short bracket feet. Stylistically the design is based on Chinese Yuan dynasty lacquer wares of the 14th century.
