A grey schist stone head of a young man
3rd century AD, Gandhara
Height 20.5 cm, 8.1 inches
The sculpture depicts an idealised youth probably Siddhartha with Greco features of almond shaped eyes, aquiline nose and sensuous closed mouth. His head is exotically swathed in a turban which leaves the top of the head exposed to reveal rivulets of hair that appear again below the turban in cascading curls, leaving the pendant ears exposed from which hang circular earrings.
