A black stone carving of Krishna Vatapatrashahi
一件黑色克里希納·瓦塔帕特拉沙希石雕

16th/17th century, Tamil Nadu South India

Length: 26cm Width: 15cm

This depiction of the baby Krishna lying on a banyan leaf and sucking his toe is a charming and hence popular image. Many of Krishna’s exploits as related in the Bhagavata-Purana were performed when he was still a child. Even so, he still stands for the supreme Vishnu of whom he is the 8th avatar.
