A seated gold Buddha on a silver throne

Ayutthaya period, 17th century, Thailand

Height: 6.5 cm, 2 ½ inches

The solid gold statue is modelled as Akshobhya, with the right hand in bhumisparsha mudra, the earth touching gesture, and his left hand resting on his lap. His face bears a serene expression, with arched eyebrows above downcast eyes, smiling lips and elongated earlobes, his tightly curled hair topped by a flaming finial. The Buddha is seated cross legged in sattvasan on a separate silver lotus base above a traditional Thai stepped platform.
