The pair of vases are painted with the same design in over glaze enamels on a white ground, the sides decorated with four scholars in a pavilion set amongst trees, a mountainous landscape and a lake with setting sun. A group of soldiers gather around the pavilion with the roofs of their tents visible on part of the bottom of the vase.
The rim of each vase is decorated with a band of ruyi heads, and each neck by four over glazed blue shou characters (longevity), the narrow shoulders depicting snatches of roof and mountain amongst clouds.
