A pair of Arita porcelain leaping carp

Circa 1700, Japan

Height: 31 cm, 12.2 inches

Each vertical leaping fish is placed on a square base to which it is attached. The carp are modelled with mouths wide open and flashing tails, painted with blue, red and pink enamels, the latter with a slight lustre.

The carp is a symbol of strength, perseverance and determination.
