A carved bowl
Qianlong period, 1736–1795
China
height: 10.2 cm
width: 16 cm
The rich lemon yellow, alms bowl shaped vessel is of globular form with a raised collar around the narrow mouth. The carved decoration is freely executed with a design of lotus flowers and leaves growing in a pond; two carp – both with extravagant fan-like tails – emerge around the base, either side of a large flat lotus leaf that occupies the centre. The walls are relatively thin and translucent.
