A
PAIR OF FAMILLE PORCELAIN FIGURES OF A GENTLEMAN AND A LADY
Circa 1820 AD
Chinese Export
The figures depict Europeans wearing fashionable dress of the period. They are most
likely to have been based on German porcelain originals - either from the Meissen or
Thuringian factories. The gentleman stands with his left foot forward - in front of a
rock, on a rough oval base decorated with flowers. He wears a pale pink coat decorated
with flowers over a light blue floral waistcoat, and yellow green floral breeches; there
is a blue cravat around his neck, and a black tricorn hat on his head. His left hand rests
upon the hilt of a sword, and the right hand is tucked into his waistcoat at the chest.
The lady wears a low cut yellow-green bodice and a pink crinoline - panelled at the
front, and open to reveal a turquoise floral under-skirt. She stands on a smaller circular
base with her left hand held up holding a fan.
