A PAIR OF MINIATURE EWERS AND TRAY

Qianlong period, 1736-1795
China

height: 7.6 cm
length: 16.5 cm

This charming and unusual miniature set most probably served a purely decorative and collectable purpose – replicating the full-scale ewers and trays that were made for the export and domestic market during this period.

The ewers are of pear shape, and decorated with lotus flowers and scrolling leaves on a yellow ground. The swan neck spouts and scrolling handles are enamelled in a dark blue ground decorated with prunus blossom; the domed covers are decorated with flower petals and surmounted by a gilt metal finial. These two ewers sit in the well of a quatrefoil lobed tray – the flat rims decorated with lotus flowers and leaves on a yellow ground, edged by a gilt metal border. The well is decorated with flowers on a white ground, and the underside with a design of cracked ice in blue.
