A STANDING WARRIOR

China
Ming dynasty
Early 15th/16th century

With traces of gilding and lacquer, the figure represents a guardian. He is clad in layered chain mail, and wears a large billowing scarf; his shoulders and stomach are protected by fierce monster mask epaulettes.

Height: 16” / 40.5 cm

The warrior may be compared with a lacquered gilt bronze statue dated 1564 AD in the Avery Brundage Museum in San Franciso.
