A
GILT BRONZE FIGURE OF A
CONFESSION BUDDHA
Suvikrantashri
15th century
Tibet or Nepal
The Buddha is seated upon a heart shaped base, with
both hands in bhumisparsa mudra - the gesture of
earth witnessing (that demonstrates the extinction
of all earthly poisons). Suvikrantashri wears close
fitting monk's robes, leaving his right chest and
arm bare.
His eyes are downcast, earlobes elongated, and he
has a spiral urna and domed ushnisha - surmounted
by a bud shaped cintamani finial. The reverse side
of the base is inscribed with the Buddha's name
in Tibetan script. The gilding is in excellent condition.
Height: 10 ½" / 26.4 cm
Similar example: 'Art of
Nepal' by P. Pal, no. S38. This is another image
of a confession Buddha from the same series, now
in the Los Angeles County Museum, and called Nepalese.
